Master Sung Kang is the oldest of Grandmaster D. W. Kang’s three sons.  He started at the age of 4 and wanted to quit at the age of 5.  When he told his father about his plans to quit, dad simply said, “Pack your bags and get out of my house.”  At 5 years of age, a child can quickly realize that it’s pretty impossible to make it out on the streets.  So, naturally, Sung decided to stay at home and continue his Tae-Kwon-Do education under the direction of his father.

During that time Sung made his Black Belt at the age of 10, and began teaching right away.  He started competing locally in Oklahoma and won at the state championship level 8 years in a row.  He won Nationals at the junior level 5 years in a row, and at the age of 16, won National Championships at the adult level.  In the same year, he became a silver medalist at the 1989 U.S. Olympic Festival when it was here in Oklahoma City.  International experience include bronze medals at the ’90 and ’91 U.S. Elite Championships and a silver medal at the U.S. / Venezuela Goodwill match.

His dedication to Tae-Kwon-Do competition was so intense that at the age of 16, when he was a senior in high school, he chose not to attend things like his senior prom, and even his graduation ceremonies.  Five days after he graduated from high school, he moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado and became a resident athlete for about 2 years.  He lived and trained under 9-time national and 3-time world champion Dae Sung Lee and along side two-time Olympic champion, Juan Miguel Moreno.   Sung, along with these champions trained approximately 60 hours per week.   During that time, he had his fair share of winning and losing.  Shortly after he turned 18, Sung retired from competition and returned home to assist his father in Tulsa, where he could re-pay his good fortune by helping others do the same.

He now assists his father at the head-quarters location in Tulsa, OK.

Sung is also the Head Coach of Kang’s UTF Olympic Sparring Team.
